“No, Sandy, I’m not pregnant...”

One day, in a crowded dentist’s office, the friendly receptionist, Sandy, loudly asked “When are you due?”.
I wasn’t pregnant.

I had been overweight ever since I was a kid and my weight just crept up as I was having kids. I felt like I was encased in a horrible prison of a body that couldn’t move easily and one that I thought was ugly. I tried diets and exercise, but nothing worked for me. I am a strong gal and even though oblivious people have given me the chance to develop more mental toughness, I realized that carrying around the extra weight really was not good for me at all. I made a decision: my fat prison was going to come off - even if it cost way more than I could ever afford. I got my Master’s in Mechanical Engineering, where I specialized in medical devices. I then went on to work at the Canadian Patent Office, where I worked as a Patent Examiner, looking at medical devices.

So I knew about the lap band and what it did. I did a bunch of research to check out the success rate. After Sandy’s remark I decided enough was enough. I was going to do something radical. Even though my family had many doubts, I traveled to Toronto with my husband and had my Lap Band surgery in 2012. After the surgery there was quite the learning curve to now cope with my new tool. The staff at the clinic did a great job with the installation of the band and in troubleshooting any band problems. I was soon recovered and in the “green zone”. The big questions that came next “What do I do next? ” or “How do I live with this thing?” were harder to figure out. I discovered quickly that the band was no magic wand but a piece of the weight loss puzzle and even if it worked perfectly, that I could still eat bad foods and not lose any weight.

I lost weight initially due to band helping me not feel as hungry, but soon reached a plateau, the first of many. I realized that it wasn’t just about the perfect adjustment of the band, but many things, like my thoughts and daily habits, what I ate, when I ate, how much I ate and what I said to myself (especially in front of the mirror). The band was the last resort and I was determined not to fail. So, I decided that I was going to use my skills to learn and study everything I could so I could lose the weight and keep it off. Slowly, as I learned and applied these new habits, thought processes and nutritional approaches, I broke through each plateau to reach my ideal weight. I am now happy to say that I now weigh less than I did when I was 12 years old and am at my goal weight, a normal weight for my height. The transformation of my life has been worth more than any money I could have won when I was obese. It was such an amazing transformation for me that I feel strongly that I must help other people. I realized that from what I experienced, I could develop a step-by-step process to guide others through the weight loss process. Guided by my mentor and coach, David Bayer, I now am taking people through my program Band Hack, and we’re seeing amazing results!

I’m now out here for you guys, the amazing people who feel committed enough to losing weight that you have lap band surgery, but don’t know what to do or what to eat. I’m here to guide you how, through my experience, small changes that you can make in a step by step process, to improve the quality of your life and health by losing the excess weight and keeping it off forever.

Now when I go out in public, I don’t cross my arms in front of me to hide my stomach. I can cross my legs. I feel comfortable. I don’t feel self-conscious. I can run with my kids or up the stairs without feeling like I’m going to die. I don’t avoid social situations. I can run a 5k without dying. I got my black belt in TaeKwonDo - because I felt like challenging myself. And now, even an oblivious person can’t mistake me for being pregnant. So there, Sandy.
